Why “Happy Employees” Leads to a Successful Software Vendor Relationship

sustainability in HR
September 28, 2015 As I was pondered a topic one of my colleagues, Rayanne Thorn, wrote about, Understanding Employee Engagement, it got me thinking deeper about a vendor’s employees, and whether prospects should consider how engaged or happy employees are at a software vendor they are considering as part of their decision-making process. I think they should and let me take you through my reasoning. Evaluating Vendors When a customer is evaluating vendors, at the top of their list is usually the vendor’s ability to meet their technological needs. If they can’t meet that, all of the other considerations are mute. After that, close behind are: 1) price; 2) the vendor’s ability to deliver on what they commit to; and 3) the vendor’s customer support. At the end of the day, I consider #2 and #3 to be the most important considerations prospects…

Understanding Employee Engagement

September 9, 2015 In the Beginning... When I became a Certified Dental Assistant just before my 19th birthday, I never wondered what employee engagement was. I never questioned whether or not I was treated well or paid enough. My boss was a 36-year old guy, a dentist who employed two hygienists, two assistants, and one office manager. As a 19-year old who had just finished an intensive three-semester program, I thought life and work were pretty sweet. And I guess they were. Until, Until my needs were no longer met and a poor working condition appeared. I made the decision to leave after three years. I loved my job, but another employee had made my life miserable. She was fired less than a year after I left. There had been no mechanism in place for me to properly report incidents and I had no…

5 Reasons for Partner-Built Integrations

September 8, 2015 "Look For Vendors..." Not too long ago, I read Starr Conspiracy’ blog post titled “The ADP and Zenefits Kerfuffle, part 2: 5 Lessons for HR Technology Customers and Vendors” from HR Tech analyst and go-to market expert George LaRocque.  A great point was shared which continues to stick with me today:   “Look for vendors that support their integrations like a product – not a service.”   Sound Advice This is sound advice to the HR Technology buyer. Not only because buyers don't want what happened to Zenefits customers to happen to them, but also to consider these 5 reasons partner-built integrations are a sound investment   Technology Stack - A supported partner integration has been built with both parties being involved.  This means their technology stack has been understood by both sides, and the integration is working within the boundaries of their…

The HCM Buying Process – Vendor Selection Strategy

employee portal
July 20, 2015 Recently, I wrote about the Sierra-Cedar HR Systems Survey, and how that survey helped me to get multi-million dollar funding for new HCM technology.  While I was writing that entry, it made me think of the next step of the HCM buying process: vendor selection.   In one of my previous roles, I was tasked with evaluating the current technology in place, then providing strategic direction of what to do with our existing HR technology - and how it would benefit our to-be designed HR Shared Services organization.   Once I could prove the most cost-effective long-term strategy for the firm was a rip-and-replace of old for new, I then set my focus on building out our requirements and the vendor selection strategy.   I’ve never been a fan of large RFPs that basically allow the vendor to tick boxes,…

SHRM Poetry and Building Tradition

No Kid Hungry
June 25, 2015 A Little History Three years ago, I was goaded into playing street hockey in Atlanta in the middle of summer. Two years ago, Jonathan Brewer and I put together one of the greatest kickball games HR has ever seen. Last year, we celebrated The Big Lebowski in a Orlando bowling alley. All of there were great fun, and were done in the spirit of changing the world.  And in the process we’ve raised a significant amount of money for those who need a little help.  And many of you have come along for the ride. Today This year, we are going in a slightly different direction.  At the SHRM Annual Conference next week, we will be hosting a Poetry Slam, and are partnering with Quantum Workplace, Broadbean, Dice and Branded Strategies in our support for No Kid Hungry. Dice is…

Childhood Hunger in America

HR Service Delivery
June 23, 2015 No Kid Hungry Would you be surprised to know that there are hungry children in America? Especially right now – the summer months are very hard for children who no longer receive supplemental meals from their schools. Dovetail Software is responding to this knowledge by, once again, raising awareness and hosting an event at the SHRM 15 National Conference June 28 – July 1 in Las Vegas. Joining us in this effort are our fellow event sponsors Quantum Workplace, Broadbean Technology, and Branded Strategies. Our #SHRMpoetry campaign launched last week and is gaining attention as more and more in the HR industry become aware of childhood hunger in America; 1 in 5 children do not receive the nutrition they need on a daily basis. We want to help. Please join us in our fight to end childhood hunger in America…

Need Help convincing the CFO/ CHRO/ CIO for HR Technology Investment?

November 30, 2012 Are you working on a new or improved HR Shared Service Center? Need that Investment for HR Technology? Want to know what funding resources and ideas are available? Read on...   The latest CedarCrestone Survey (in its 15th edition) is riddled with great information on HR Service Delivery. When I was a practitioner I often used excerpts from this survey to help support HR technology investments for HR Shared Services. One of the key findings in the latest survey around HR Service Delivery within an HRSSC reads - "Service delivery automation delivers at least 15% in administrative savings when pervasive employee and manager self service and a move to shared services with an HR help desk application is adopted."   That last comment hits the nail on the head! Deploying an HR Case Management/ HR Helpdesk tool should be high on your Christmas Wish List this year! Wanting…

HR Brit is Coming To America: Part 1

November 29, 2012   I’ve recently joined Dovetail Software as Chief Strategy Officer; my role is to build the company’s vision, focus on product strategy and to identify key strategic alliances that will benefit the firm, our partners and ultimately our customers.  Where did I come from I hear you ask…   Firstly I’m a Brit from across the pond, so I started my career in an English town in Surrey called Woking, sitting on a Customer Support desk working for a company that sold Helpdesk products, which is where I learnt the importance of excellent Customer Service and Support!   Customer Relationship Management (CRM) seemed like an ideal career for me, I have a thirst for knowledge and thrive on sharing what I know with others.  CRM took off in a big way, especially in Europe, where I spent 11 years working on large CRM…

December Webinar: Twitter? I’m in HR. Why would I need that?

November 16, 2012 Among the popular social media website websites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and FourSquare, Twitter stands out in a unique way. Unlike other forms of social media, Twitter requires users to be actively engaged in topics that are relevant or interesting to them. Tweeters follow important topics, retweet people’s postings and favorite conversations.   Averaging over 1 billion tweets a day, Twitter has the high-volume traffic your organization is searching for. Twitter’s unique word of mouth structure easily allows for engaging users on a wide variety of diverse topics. Topics found on Twitter are often based on spreading the word about breaking news, an opinionated review or an upcoming event.   As the second most popular social media website, Twitter is a must-use tool for reaching the public and announcing breaking information. It is even a must-use tool for the world…
