Maternity Leave and HR Help Desk Solutions

August 4, 2014 I know this face hasn’t popped up on our blog in a long time, so you might not recognize me, but I work at Dovetail. I just had my first baby and have been on maternity leave for the last three and a half months. On my first day of maternity leave, one day before the baby arrived, I thought, “there’s no way I’ll really completely check out of work for 3 months.” But that’s exactly what I did. As it turns out, as wonderful as it is to be a first-time parent, it’s as equally completely overwhelming and exhausting. I was too much of a zombie the first two months to even remember I had a job (that wasn’t taking care of my daughter), much less keep up with it. Additionally, I work for an incredibly family-friendly organization, have very…

The CedarCrestone Survey is Open!

June 6, 2014 We love HR technology, and we love people who work to make it better. That’s why we are proud to support CedarCrestone once again with their HR Systems Survey. I would hope that you already know what the survey is all about, you can skip the next bit. If not, keep reading! Dovetail Software invites you to participate in the CedarCrestone 2014–2015 HR Systems Survey: HR Technologies, Deployment Approaches, Integration, Analytics, and Value, 17th Annual Edition. This year’s annual Survey is now available at www.CedarCrestone.com/hrssv60 and responses will be collected until June 30th, 2014. Last year, the Survey collected over 1,200 responses—please help make this year an even greater success. This year, the survey is being brought to us by Lexy Martin, one of our favorite people, AND by Stacey Harris, another of our favorite people. Aside from adding a…

The Problem with Vendors as Speakers

June 3, 2014     I consider myself fortunate to get to attend a number of HR conferences each year, and even more so to be invited on stage with a live microphone at many.  I've had that honor in eighteen states, as well as in other countries on two continents.  I enjoy it immensely (probably because it helps me overcome my shyness) and have made no small number of friends and professional contacts along the way.  When I joined Dovetail two years ago, though, I was very surprised to receive a call from a colleague congratulating me on the move, and letting me know I would not be invited to speak at their conference.  I was now a vendor, and vendors aren't invited to speak.  I was disappointed, but I understood. In the last two years, I've been invited to speak at…

Data, Data Everywhere: A Sneak Peek

May 7, 2014 I'll be presenting at the IQPC HR Shared Services & Outsourcing Summit on May 19th.  The topic I'm putting together, Data, Data Everywhere, is focused on the ways data accessibility and security have changed over the last few years.  I presented some of this information earlier this year at the LEHRN event in Minneapolis, MN, but this will be a much more expanded and interactive session.  A few of the things that attendees can expect... What is PII, and where can it be found? What special considerations should be made for international operations? What are our responsibilities, both as companies and as individuals, when it comes to protecting personal information? What special considerations should be given to recruiters? What are the five things you should be doing RIGHT NOW about security? How easy is it for data to be stolen,…

HR Shared Services Summit

May 6, 2014 Dovetail Software is a sponsor of the 15th HR Shared Services and Outsourcing Summit in Chicago, May 19-21st. The show itself provides an opportunity for HR professionals to network with vendors and other HR Shared Services leaders as well a gain insight from industry leaders on a vast array of topics facing today's HR shared service organizations. The conference is being held in downtown Chicago at the Marriott.   My colleague and friend Dwane Lay will be leading a pre-conference workshop Monday afternoon at 3:30 on data security in a session titled “Data Data Everywhere”. For those of you that haven’t met Dwane, this is your chance and you’re in for a treat. Dwane heads up our HR Process Design at Dovetail, he's a Six-Sigma Black Belt and a LEAN HR guy. In other words, he knows his stuff and…

Shaping the Future of HR Shared Services

April 25, 2014   As we've said over and over, we at Dovetail are fans of HR. I would go so far as to say in our corner of the HR Tech industry, our team has logged more years as practitioners, more hours working and speaking at events, and have invested more personal time in serving the profession than anyone. And we're terribly proud of it. In that time, though, we've observed an interesting phenomenon when it comes to HR Shared Services, especially when it comes to events. Conferences tend to be either HR events or HR Shared Services events, but rarely do they serve both groups. It's fascinating to watch, but troubling when you think about the long term implications. The message being sent, potentially, is that you are either a true practitioners, slogging through the trenches and trying to save the…

Thoughts from the ScottMadden HR Shared Services Survey

April 1, 2014 ScottMadden recently released their HR Shared Services Benchmarking Survey, and there is some really interesting data for your review.  You can get the results here or email enquiry@iqpc.com with the subject line “Survey Results – 15HRSSO_LNK_HRSSO” for a copy.  They do a great job of looking at several elements of Shared Services, and the report summarizes them nicely.  There are a few numbers in the report that I found especially interesting that I'd like to point out.  Feel free to go grab a copy before you read further.  I'll wait. OK, is everyone back?  Great. First, on page five, I was struck by how many organizations have a Shared Services function that is less than a year old.  The benefits and the method of setting up a Shared Services function are well documented, and yet there are companies that are…

The Gen C Impact on HR Shared Services

March 25, 2014   The idea of Gen C has been emerging for the last few years, and the idea is  impacting how we hire, how we relate to our community of customers and, if we are smart, how we deal with employees.  Having an HR Shared Services team that knows how to connect to Gen C can not only improve satisfaction on both sides, but can help in getting your Gen C employees focused back on productivity sooner. The term "Gen C" has been around for almost a decade, though it is only recently congealed into the current meaning.  Gen C refers to the first non-age-based generation, and refers to those "who care deeply about creation, curation, connection, and community."  (Follow the link to see a short introduction from our friends at Google.)  By their estmates, 80% of Gen C happen to…

Dovetail is sponsoring the survey again this year to help provide HR leaders with real-world statistics on how their peers measure productivity, benchmark performance and analyze the FTEs and Costs associated with HR service delivery. We will also be offering a webinar sharing the survey’s findings related specifically to the use of HR Help Desk software and other HR technology.   On Thursday, April 3rd from 12:30 - 1:30pm CDT, Dwane Lay will host the survey's author and president of the HR Shared Services Institute Jim Scully. They will discuss the tools and tactics your peers are using to benchmark performance, foster continuous improvement and track productivity gains in their HR Shared…
