Is HR Broken?

What do you think? I’ve heard and read it often that HR is, indeed, broken.

Human Resources and Talent Management are supposed to assist employees (ranging from high-ranking executives to the newest and most subordinate player) in their experience at work, making it better.  HR should, most definitely, listen to and be responsive to every employee on payroll.

Human Resource Professionals have fought for years to get a seat at the table. But, what exactly does that mean? We should be tired of the excuses given for why bad employment experiences exist. Facing unique financial pressures, colleges and universities must have HR departments that operate efficiently and at a high level. They must move past basic administrative roles and become a major organizational influence. In order to combat these pressures effectively, it may help to identify some key challenges that cross the path of human resource professionals at institutions of higher learning.

What are the Key Challenges? Budget – HR budgets in higher education have tended to be 50 – 75 % lower than those found in other industries, according to a study by Aon. In addition, state budget shortfalls have made it necessary for all departments to cut back. Rising Healthcare Costs – The same Aon study found that increasing healthcare costs are a top concern for Higher Ed HR. Recruiting – Attracting and Retaining new employees

It’s Back!

Carnival of HR: I feel like we just finished sweeping up the popcorn and peanut shells from last time, and yet here we are!

I’m always excited to get to host the carnival.  It’s a great chance for us to stay connected to the HR community that means so much to us, and to share our platform with great authors in our space.  Thanks to all of you for visiting and reading.  Please take a few minutes to check out the links.

Theme: Conferences

Our theme, loosely applied as always, is around conferences.  We do a lot of them, and we were very much looking forward to SHRM16 this month.  We’ve realized, though, that the show starts on Father’s Day this year.  That’s happened in the past, and it usually kills off any chance of attending for me.
