HR Tech Conference – The #1 Event for HR Technology

October 12, 2012   Just came back from an exhausting, but very productive 4 days at HR Tech in Chicago. As a CEO of a HR software vendor, my goals are different from the HR practitioners who are there. So, from my perspective, the HR Technology Conference is the #1 event for a HR technology vendor. Let me highlight the reasons:   In one location, I am able to meet and update the HR analysts on what our company is doing. While exhausting to schedule briefings back to back, there is no better vehicle to accomplish this as easily as you can do at HR Tech. Dovetail had identified a number of potential partners. I was able to meet with key executives at each firm we had identified to discuss possible relationships, face to face, which is always better than initial discussions on…

Considering PHR/SPHR Certification? Good Idea.

June 7, 2012 Why continue your education? As a current college student I can appreciate the importance of higher education. Yes, some days and some exams make me want to give up, but I know all of my hard work will be worth it when I receive a diploma. In today’s world, a degree or a certification shows commitment to your peers, employees and organization and your dedication to your profession.   HR certifications show that you have mastered the core HR principles that drive your profession. Earning an HR Certification can set you apart in many ways, including:   Making your resume stand out. One out of two recruiters prefer those with HR certifications. Recognition from your organization: HR certified professionals are viewed as more self-motivated by business leaders Networking opportunities: this certification connects you to an elite network of motivated HR…

HR Practitioners, Contribute to my Goal of Not Writing CR*P and Get a Free Starbuck’s Coffee!

January 20, 2012 My mission as a blogger and a content developer is to create valuable, educational content for my readers through a deeper understanding of what HR practitioners need to improve their work experience and add more value to their organizations. The most valuable feedback and information I collect is not from analysts, consultants or my boss (sorry Boss), it’s from you – our readers. In other words, I don't want to write about cr*p that no one wants to read, and I'd like to enlist you for some help. To improve the content I put out and do my job better, I’d like to gain a better understanding of your world. In that spirit, I am conducting research on organization’s best practices for HR case management and employee relations. I’d like the benefit of your knowledge and experience with HR case…

How HR Analytics Can Help HR Lead Change

November 22, 2011 I just read a very informative article by Human Resources IQ contributor Brad Powers, a consultant and researcher in process innovation, addressing why HR does not often lead change to improve their organization’s processes. At the end of the article, he cites two causes responsible for the difficulty of HR leading change: 1) HR is often viewed by the CEO and executive team as a supporting role instead of a partner, who can offer the organization advice and counsel, 2) HR hires HR experience, who are accustomed to being viewed in a support role and will be less credible and comfortable engaging in operational advice. I agree with both of these causes, but would propose a third cause: a lack of reporting on employee-related issues leaves HR with little evidence to support recommendations for process changes. In a previous blog…

Employee Grievances & Lawsuits – Preparation is the Best Defense

November 16, 2011   Hindsight is always a great thing. I wish I had ______ (fill in the blank). When it comes to Employee Grievances and the potential lawsuits that might follow, there is no doubt that a company that has issued appropriate policies and documented everything stands a better chance of avoiding a lawsuit or mitigating a pay-out.   Now, just because you have good policies and practices doesn’t ensure that you won’t face a lawsuit. However, good practices, especially good documentation will be critical when such a lawsuit is filed. Let me tell you about a recent experience I had. Through a mutual friend, I was introduced to the CEO in the healthcare field, and he agreed to meet with me to talk about Dovetail’s HR help desk product. After hearing what our product could do, he commented, “Unfortunately, we won’t…

What Do Successful HR Departments & Technology Vendors Have in Common? A Good Onboarding Program

November 14, 2011 I attended a webinar last Thursday presented by HR Marketer and William Tincup, an expert in HR marketing and technology user adoption. The webinar, You Built It, They Bought It, But Do They Use It?, was designed to help HR technology marketers turn buyers into loyal users and advocates of their solutions. Throughout the presentation, Tincup advises marketers to treat customers the way good HR departments treat employees. At one point, he made the very true statement that many HR tech vendors are relentless when it comes to lead generation and gaining customers, but lose that vigor when it comes to getting their customers to actually use their product. I think the same could be said for many HR departments: They are relentless when it comes to recruiting and signing Talent but do not approach ensuring their new hires are…

HR Metrics & Thinking Like the CEO

November 9, 2011 HR has had difficulty getting approval to spend money on HR technology. One of the biggest obstacles has been their inability to justify an investment by putting together a proper business case for what they want to purchase. One component in putting together a proper business case is measuring performance by capturing appropriate metrics. So, now the question is, “Are we currently measuring anything?” and if not, “What should we measure?”   Apparently, this is not as simple a question as one might expect. Many organizations are capturing certain metrics, but there is disagreement as to whether these are the correct metrics to measure. Lance Haun recently wrote a blog post, in which he cited a survey conducted by Focus that asked HR folks, “What are the most important Metrics you use to measure HR’s value in the organization?” The top two cited…

Can You Manage Your Employee Grievance Process?

July 27, 2011 We had a customer meeting last month and the customer was trying to solve a very basic, but important problem – managing their grievance process. Their current method in tracking an employee’s grievance was a nightmare. Image a system with paper folders, unconnected communications, and sticky notes. They didn’t know who was doing what, what remained to be completed, whether they were completing tasks on-time, and had no easy ability to look at the history of a given grievance or come up with any meaningful statistics on how they were handling grievances. So what do they want? They want to track an employee’s grievance from beginning to end. More specifically they wanted to: Track all interactions no matter the communication channel; Know which HR advisor is responsible for the grievance at any given point in time (the person might change…

IHRIM 2011 Recap

May 26, 2011 I attended my first IHRIM conference last week in Washington D.C. I was quite impressed by the attendees and their thirst for knowledge: from the various sessions, through networking, and by the various technology solutions being showcased by the vendors in the Expo hall. Dovetail also exhibited at the conference and we were very busy at our booth, often times people were waiting for assistance or the chance to see a demo of our product. It was great to see that attendees were interested in learning how a HR Help Desk solution could help their organization.   I walked the Exhibit Hall a number of times and met a number of the CEOs I had previously talked to, but never met, including Lois Melbourne of Aquire, Jason Averbook of Knowledge Infusion, and Shafiq Lokhandwala of NuView Systems. Unfortunately, each of…
