Healthcare HR: Addressing the Ongoing Staffing Shortage

healthcare HR staffing shortage
September 12, 2017 Not Much Has Changed When I first started recruiting in healthcare fifteen plus years ago, it seemed like all that was talked about was the nursing shortage. The conversation is ongoing and, sadly, hasn't changed much. This Healthcare HR trending topic is addressed by many - the topic is addressed - but, not the issue. Employee Engagement > Retention For many years, we have been talking about how employer branding and employee engagement leads to the retention of quality talent. “The talent shortage isn’t going to go away any time soon, but just like any other industry, healthcare can look to leverage partners to assist with systems and best practices to attract the kind of people you need..” – Dan White, President of Workforce Solutions at AMN Healthcare Tune in for the second part of the podcast series, "Healthcare HR in Crisis" with guest…

Healthcare HR in Crisis

Healthcare HR
September 10, 2017 Why I Care My first "HR" job, if you will, was as a sourcer for a healthcare-specific executive search firm. This job changed my life. No, seriously. Several things happened. I fell in love with recruiting, every part of it -- EXCEPT telling someone that they didn't get the job - that remains, to this day, one of the "work duties" I have disliked most. After having spent 20 years in the dental field, I transitioned easily to healthcare, and really grew to the love the business of healthcare. I realized that I had a mind for business and I quickly changed my major from Education (I had wanted to teach junior high - I know - I'm nuts!) to Business and adjusted mind-blowingly quickly to a corporate mindset. The sales professional in me found a new and exciting home…

Discovering HR Case Management

discovering HR Case Management
May 15, 2017 HR Case Management Case Management, itself, speaks to tracking cases or issues with clients or customers. Healthcare Case Management tracks the life cycle of a patient, through every interaction with a healthcare provider or healthcare facility/system. HR Case Management is the reporting and tracking of every single employee interaction with the human resources department in an organization. This allows for the best understanding possible of the employee experience with the employer, as well as understanding the employer experience with said employee. And it is all about collecting the data from those interactions, then saving and using that data for future interactions, questions, or issues that come into HR - this keeps any information from being lost or allowing issues or challenges to be mishandled, mismanaged or not managed at all. The Flow of HR Case Management Made Easy Employee contacts…

The Challenges Faced by Human Resources in Higher Education

Higher Education Human Resources
April 12, 2017 HR in Higher Ed Facing unique financial pressures, colleges and universities must have HR departments that operate efficiently and at a high level. They must move past basic administrative roles and become a major organizational influence. In order to combat these pressures effectively, it may help to identify some key challenges that cross the path of human resource professionals at institutions of higher learning. What are the Key Challenges? Budget - HR budgets in higher education have tended to be 50 - 75 % lower than those found in other industries, according to a study by Aon. In addition, state budget shortfalls have made it necessary for all departments to cut back. Rising Healthcare Costs - The same Aon study found that increasing healthcare costs are a top concern for Higher Ed HR. Recruiting - Attracting and Retaining new employees…

The Employee Path: Talent Attraction & Talent Management

employee path
March 29, 2017 The Ongoing Conversations I've been having more and more conversations about employee growth and development. This extends beyond the tired and overused phrase Employee Engagement. I think it's fascinating that so many write, and talk, and present of the importance of retention but little is really done to ensure that their company shines when it comes to these efforts. Talent Attraction vs. Talent Management Is there really a difference between talent attraction and talent management? Shouldn't there be a concerted and continued effort to attract the talent you have already acquired? I am often dumbfounded by the crazy amount of effort that goes into talent attraction, recruitment marketing, employer branding, and hiring when compared to the lack of efforts put into retention, employee development, and succession planning. Is there no real understanding of what it takes to replace a good,…

Empower Employees with One Simple Tool

employee portal
February 2, 2017 The Employee Portal Dovetail Software was very excited to launch our updated employee portal last September. As we continue to help organizations with employee communications and interactions, we understand the need to listen to what is important to employees because this assists our clients, the employers. Empower Employees Does it make sense to empower the workforce with "self" access to information? We think it does. Making  knowledge readily and easily available, they are able to get answers quickly and easily. I have always felt that an informed and smart workforce is a productive and loyal workforce. The information shared with employees becomes another notch toward employee engagement, which we know leads to less attrition and retention of talent - obviously quality talent because they have chosen to become or stay informed about their own employment and ask questions they need…

Opportunity Breeds Success

January 11, 2017 Nature vs. Nurture? The on-going discussion: the naturally-gifted vs. the manufactured.  Are those who are naturally talented less likely to work hard to achieve success?  Does hard work drive success, whether you are talented or not?  I have often stated, “Hard work pays off. Always.” But does it really? How about the kid who studies her heart out to maintain a C+ average versus the one who never studies and maintains a 4.0 or better?  I grew up with kids like both representations. Personally, I endlessly studied and in my case, the hard work paid off with good grades. But was it my natural inclination toward the subjects I studied - those I selected or was it the hard work which resulted in good grades? We can argue incessantly about how success is achieved.  But I think Winston Churchill said…

Synergy and Strength: Finding the Balance

Synergy
January 5, 2017 “Synergy... it creates new untapped alternatives; it values and exploits the mental, emotional, and psychological differences between people.” ~Stephen Covey The Team Being a part of a team can be a wonderful, exhilarating, delightful, excruciating, debilitating, and/or harrowing experience. Navigating the roads to a successful internal partnership can be dangerous and filled with trepidation that must often be cajoled with tenacity. But without the stubbornness that must be honed as business partners/owners, we may become nothing more than corporate doormats; laid out for all to wipe their feet on. Weakness or Strength? I have been in numerous meetings which have resulted in, “I told you so” moments. I'm sure we all have. One meeting in particular?  It wasn’t actually said out loud but it was felt by all in the room. Knowing when to utilize strength in an office setting…
