Fall Conference Season is Here!

September 16, 2014 I never tire of conference season.  Getting to see so many familiar faces, hearing the latest from the world of Human Resources and shared services, seeing all the advances in the HR technology world are perks of the job.  And I'm excited to say the season is upon us again.  It is, truly, the most wonderful time of the year. If you happen to be out and about, I'd love the chance to say hello.  The standing offer, as usual, is that if we've not met before and you catch up to me, I'll buy the first round of coffee.  So where can you cash in?  We will be making our annual trek to the HR Technology Conference, of course.  This year we're also supporting our friends at cFactor as they host an Onboarding event featuring Kyle Lagunas of the…

The CedarCrestone Survey is Open!

June 6, 2014 We love HR technology, and we love people who work to make it better. That’s why we are proud to support CedarCrestone once again with their HR Systems Survey. I would hope that you already know what the survey is all about, you can skip the next bit. If not, keep reading! Dovetail Software invites you to participate in the CedarCrestone 2014–2015 HR Systems Survey: HR Technologies, Deployment Approaches, Integration, Analytics, and Value, 17th Annual Edition. This year’s annual Survey is now available at www.CedarCrestone.com/hrssv60 and responses will be collected until June 30th, 2014. Last year, the Survey collected over 1,200 responses—please help make this year an even greater success. This year, the survey is being brought to us by Lexy Martin, one of our favorite people, AND by Stacey Harris, another of our favorite people. Aside from adding a…

Thoughts from the ScottMadden HR Shared Services Survey

April 1, 2014 ScottMadden recently released their HR Shared Services Benchmarking Survey, and there is some really interesting data for your review.  You can get the results here or email enquiry@iqpc.com with the subject line “Survey Results – 15HRSSO_LNK_HRSSO” for a copy.  They do a great job of looking at several elements of Shared Services, and the report summarizes them nicely.  There are a few numbers in the report that I found especially interesting that I'd like to point out.  Feel free to go grab a copy before you read further.  I'll wait. OK, is everyone back?  Great. First, on page five, I was struck by how many organizations have a Shared Services function that is less than a year old.  The benefits and the method of setting up a Shared Services function are well documented, and yet there are companies that are…

HR Tech 2014 – The View From The Booth

October 21, 2013 I love HR Tech, but you probably knew that.  Being part of the Dovetail team has given me a very different perspective on it, though.  In the past, most of my time was spent in the sessions, which are great.  This year, our booth was so busy, I didn't get much of a chance to step away.  I found, though, that you can pick up some great information as a vendor without wandering far from home. The attendees this year were, I think, more educated than I've seen in the past.  I'm basing this on the number of people who really knew what they were looking for, as opposed to wandering the floor with glazed eyes.  I was part of several conversations around how the technology market has evolved lately and what it means to them.  They are more concerned…

Why Many HR Software Implementations Fail

August 22, 2013 Based on my years of professional experience in HR technology and implementation in particular, I'd like offer some thoughts on why software implementations fail.   In my opinion, the reason many implementations fail is actually two-fold. Either the process is made unnecessarily complicated and weighed down by bureaucracy or the overall project isn't given enough merit and by that I mean not having the right team members in place, adequate time devoted to the project, clear cut objectives, a lack of strategic planning, and finally often saddled with a deadline that prohibits success.   The dreaded over complicated project typically drags on endlessly, is often over complicated by a series of scope calls where no one makes strategic decisions without a series of sub-meetings and second guessing. These implementations often have too many team members involved in the process which…

HR, Science Fiction and the Future

April 18, 2013 As a self-admitted recovering nerd, it should be no surprise I've been a sci-fi fan my whole life.  Whether it's pouring over the Patton Oswalt Star Wars filibuster, reading all the Iron Man 3 spoilers I can find, or wondering which direction The Walking Dead will take next, I've always been  fascinated  with the genre.  And I've often wondered if there are any really great ideas that sci-fi hasn't already given us.  Remember the old saying, "science fiction plus time equals science fact"?  It's all true.   So I do wonder at times if there is anything new we can expect out of HR.  Have we already hit on all the good ideas?  Are we just trying to make them reality?  If we look at the writings of Asimov, Gibson, or Phillip K. Dick, we are shown worlds where HR doesn't exist.  Where our systems run our…

The Carnival of HR – It’s All About Sharing

March 27, 2013 One of the best things about having a blog in the HR world is getting the chance to be part of the Carnival of HR.  If you are really lucky, you occasionally get to host it and call the shots.  And I, apparently, am very lucky indeed!  This carnival is about sharing and evangelism.  My partners here at Dovetail have never been shy about promoting the practice of HR, so we decided that we should spin the carnival in that direction.  We asked for submissions not just of good posts, but of good posts from someone else.  I had no idea how flooded I would be with responses!   Sure, there are some of our favorite writers included, but you’ll also find plenty of new names, pushed to us by those favorite writers.  There are a ton of great voices out…

Buzzword Bingo and HR Tech Conferences

February 27, 2013   We all know the game.  We usually play it, at least in our heads.  But there would be something very refreshing about one of the big shows making it part of the scene.  How much fun would it be to have buzzword bingo as part of a big HR technology conference?   Silly?  Maybe.  But the intent shouldn’t be to take away from a presentation or display by making a game out of searching for keywords.  I’d suggest instead it should be done to discourage their use, forcing marketing teams to describe their product in meaningful terms rather than joining the nearly indiscernible mob migrating toward the hottest topics of the day.   No more buzz.  No more gamification, big data, cloud computing, or social technology.  Forget about seats at tables or employee engagement as abstract terms.  Move past…

HR Tech – The View From The Booth

October 21, 2012 There are few things I look forward to each year as much as the HR Tech Conference.  This year was a bit different, though, as it was my first as a member of a vendor team.  Trolling the aisle of the expo floor takes on a whole different vibe when you are part of the event instead of just an attendee.  For those of you that have never experienced it from the other side of the kiosk, I'd love to share what I was able to experience this year.     Booths   Getting to be involved in planning and designing a booth for the first time revealed a secret to me.  It's kinda hard.  Trying to balance a professional image with a fun reason to visit is a tough act.  Trying to find ways to get the attention of…

HR Case Management Can Be Daunting!

HR Case Management
September 30, 2011 HR Case Management: What's it all about? As I talk with prospective clients on a daily basis and we at Dovetail collectively educate the HR world about the powerful benefits of properly tracking interactions through HR Case Management with their employees, I often hear the response, “I don’t think we’re sophisticated or mature enough of a HR organization to handle that.” And I get it. Nearly everyone I talk to genuinely understands the importance of tracking these interactions, having a detailed audit trail when needing to see where an on-going issue with an employee may have taken a bad turn or discovering where one’s HR workforce is truly spending its time. They too want to know what’s most important to employees on any given week/month/quarter, have the ability to actually enforce various compliance mandates and Service Level Agreements, as well…
