HR, Still the “Ugly Step-Child” When it Comes to Technology

August 5, 2014 Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the HRSSI Conference in Atlanta. The conference is a Human Resources (HR) Shared Services event for HR Executives and Jim Scully has done a nice job of marketing to that particular audience with content rich in information without the SALES pitch of other HR Shared Services shows.  It is appropriately named the HRSSI Shared Service Institute Executive Retreat. I came away from the HRSSI retreat with a few new friends and some valuable insight on current trends, challenges and what technology solutions are prevalent in HR Shared Services today. Many of the scheduled presenters had solid metrics that they were willing to share and discuss. I left with a burning question though…why are so many of Fortune Top 500 Companies forced to use their  IT Departments CRM solution/technology to manage the complex HR…

SHRM, Ko Kid Hungy, and The Big Lebowski

June 13, 2014 In what has become a much anticipated part of the SHRM Annual conference, the social team is once again taking time out on Sunday to benefit No Kid Hungry, this time hitting the lanes in tribute to The Big Lebowski and, of course, NKH mega-supporter Jeff Bridges. This year, more than 16 million children in America will face hunger. That’s one in five. Share our Strength is working to connect hungry kids with the food they need to grow and thrive. We're doing our part to connect kids to the healthy food they need every day.  Every dollar we raise will make a huge impact for kids. In fact, just $1 can help connect a child with 10 meals.   We are proud to partner with Dice.com once again in sponsoring this event.  Dice is an important part of the social and HR infrastructure, and…

The CedarCrestone Survey is Open!

June 6, 2014 We love HR technology, and we love people who work to make it better. That’s why we are proud to support CedarCrestone once again with their HR Systems Survey. I would hope that you already know what the survey is all about, you can skip the next bit. If not, keep reading! Dovetail Software invites you to participate in the CedarCrestone 2014–2015 HR Systems Survey: HR Technologies, Deployment Approaches, Integration, Analytics, and Value, 17th Annual Edition. This year’s annual Survey is now available at www.CedarCrestone.com/hrssv60 and responses will be collected until June 30th, 2014. Last year, the Survey collected over 1,200 responses—please help make this year an even greater success. This year, the survey is being brought to us by Lexy Martin, one of our favorite people, AND by Stacey Harris, another of our favorite people. Aside from adding a…

Data, Data Everywhere: A Sneak Peek

May 7, 2014 I'll be presenting at the IQPC HR Shared Services & Outsourcing Summit on May 19th.  The topic I'm putting together, Data, Data Everywhere, is focused on the ways data accessibility and security have changed over the last few years.  I presented some of this information earlier this year at the LEHRN event in Minneapolis, MN, but this will be a much more expanded and interactive session.  A few of the things that attendees can expect... What is PII, and where can it be found? What special considerations should be made for international operations? What are our responsibilities, both as companies and as individuals, when it comes to protecting personal information? What special considerations should be given to recruiters? What are the five things you should be doing RIGHT NOW about security? How easy is it for data to be stolen,…

Shaping the Future of HR Shared Services

April 25, 2014   As we've said over and over, we at Dovetail are fans of HR. I would go so far as to say in our corner of the HR Tech industry, our team has logged more years as practitioners, more hours working and speaking at events, and have invested more personal time in serving the profession than anyone. And we're terribly proud of it. In that time, though, we've observed an interesting phenomenon when it comes to HR Shared Services, especially when it comes to events. Conferences tend to be either HR events or HR Shared Services events, but rarely do they serve both groups. It's fascinating to watch, but troubling when you think about the long term implications. The message being sent, potentially, is that you are either a true practitioners, slogging through the trenches and trying to save the…

HR RFP Creation: Solutions to Improve the Process

January 13, 2014 RFP = Request for Proposal RFI = Request for Information RFQ = Request for Quote So you want to create an RFP for your human resources (HR) project huh? Really? Why? I find it funny that so many companies are putting HR projects out for an RFP without a clear goal in mind. I mean, essentially they all have the same goal overall, don’t they…to get the best solution at the lowest possible cost. But, shouldn’t there be a higher objective? Shouldn’t the goal be to determine how each vendor matches up against the unique requirements of your organization? Shouldn’t there be at least one SPECIFIC goal that means something to your company?  What are you REALLY trying to accomplish? Certainly it isn’t to create more work for your team especially since HR teams are leaner than ever.   I’m…

SLA Rule Perspectives & HR Service Delivery – Part Two

January 7, 2014 My fellow colleague Dwane Lay recently wrote a blog entry regarding Service Level Agreements (SLA’s) and how we both have slight different views on SLA’s in relation to Case Management. What does SLA actually mean? Firstly if we step back and ask ourselves “what do we actually mean by the term SLA?” I often hear people speak of an SLA as simply an amount of time a Service Provider has to respond or provide a resolution for a Customer issue; although these are components of an SLA, this is not a true definition of one.  An SLA is much more than this! An SLA is an agreement between two parties, that describes the service provided, documents the Service Level Targets (what the service will be measured against, think KPI’s), and specifies the responsibilities of the Service Provider (HR in our…

Business Ethics, A Thing of the Past?

October 31, 2013 As a Sales Director for Dovetail Software, I work daily with many different companies looking for HR Help Desk Software. Often these are organization conducting an RFP for their HR Shared Service organization. They are generally comparing vendors in order to find the solution that best meets the needs of their organizations. What I keep seeing are situations where our competitors grossly exaggerate their number of clients and most often the functionality of their product/software. So I wonder, is the term “Business Ethics” an oxymoron?  Is it now the norm to lie and thus the sole responsibility of the company to properly vet out the vendors that are being dishonest?   Being honest and forthright is something we believe in as an organization and my personal brand is important to me so I steer away from that practice. However, I’m…

The Art of Employee Self Service

January 28, 2013 I've been lucky enough to work with organizations that have employee self-service to varying degrees.  Some push every piece of work back to the crowd, some only make it look like the employee can do anything on their own.  Not all self-service systems are created equal, and if they were the implementation plan and functional design would make sure there are winners and losers in each instance.  Because this tool is so easy to put into place and, if done right, so valuable to the organization, we thought it a worthwhile endeavor to share some thoughts on the fine art of building a great self service tool.   There are ways of ensuring employee self service is well define and well executed, and they start, as most projects do, with an understanding of who the customers really are.   So, for whom is employee…

DVD Marathons and HR Service Delivery

October 29, 2012 Like any good sales process, our friends at Amazon have done a great job of pitching products that we've never known we couldn't live without.  This weekend, they did their best to entice me with a DVD set for Series 7, which I think is about reality shows.  But what caught my eye was the "Marathon Edition" banner.  For a series that aired in 2000, it's a surprisingly innovative approach to packaging.     If you don't know, "marathoning" is the process of sitting and blowing through an entire season, or at least a significant chunk, all at once rather than an hour at a time.  I know plenty of people who have marathoned entire seasons of shows to get caught up before a final season (Lost, Breaking Bad, and 24 come to mind).  It's a great way to waste…
