Building a HR Shared Service Function with HR Case Management

November 5, 2013 At Dovetail, we are very often asked to consult with clients who are building their HR Shared Services team.  In many cases, this will include an HR helpdesk function and human resources case management software.  This usually includes human resource reporting and human resources analytics, as well as physical and functional setup.  While my focus with the team is usually on the HR reporting side, there are a few lessons we've learned when it comes to HR service delivery that apply almost universally. First, make sure you have the right people on the team.  There is a myth that if your system is built correctly, you can staff your HR help desk team with entry level call center employees, and they need no experience with HR case management software or functionality.  The truth is while our software may make the…

Business Ethics, A Thing of the Past?

October 31, 2013 As a Sales Director for Dovetail Software, I work daily with many different companies looking for HR Help Desk Software. Often these are organization conducting an RFP for their HR Shared Service organization. They are generally comparing vendors in order to find the solution that best meets the needs of their organizations. What I keep seeing are situations where our competitors grossly exaggerate their number of clients and most often the functionality of their product/software. So I wonder, is the term “Business Ethics” an oxymoron?  Is it now the norm to lie and thus the sole responsibility of the company to properly vet out the vendors that are being dishonest?   Being honest and forthright is something we believe in as an organization and my personal brand is important to me so I steer away from that practice. However, I’m…

HR Tech Europe – The Show Across The Pond

This year, I had the pleasure of attending the HR Tech Europe show in Amsterdam for the first time.  It's easy to see why HR leaders, especially those who run HR Shared Services or HR Service Delivery teams, would be willing to fly from around the globe for the show.  And it's not just to visit Amsterdam.  Marc Coleman and his team have put together a show that has grown in leaps and bounds in the last three years, and offers some serious value to those who make the trip. First, the atmosphere is one that every HR leader begging to be taken seriously should celebrate.  A professional atmosphere, free of boondogglers and junketeers, marked by HR leaders dressed for a business conference, and vendors attired to match.  I saw only one booth (and honestly can't recall who it was)…

Dovetail HR Help Desk Implementations

October 21, 2013 Over the past year or so working with customers as they go through initial implementations of Dovetail’s Employee Engagement Suite (EES) I’ve started to notice a pattern. But before I tell you what it is, let me rewind a little -- Setup for EES is done mostly by “configuration” rather than “customization”. And really, that’s an understatement. The real goal is to do it all by configuration and allow ZERO customization. As we see it, configurations are changes that can be done within the application, by our customers and Dovetailers. But customization is a “code level” change (something done by a developer) that is usually not possible without considerable training and expertise. From a vendor point of view it is MUCH easier for us to support our customers doing configurations than doing customizations. From a customer point of view high…

HR Tech 2014 – The View From The Booth

I love HR Tech, but you probably knew that.  Being part of the Dovetail team has given me a very different perspective on it, though.  In the past, most of my time was spent in the sessions, which are great.  This year, our booth was so busy, I didn't get much of a chance to step away.  I found, though, that you can pick up some great information as a vendor without wandering far from home. The attendees this year were, I think, more educated than I've seen in the past.  I'm basing this on the number of people who really knew what they were looking for, as opposed to wandering the floor with glazed eyes.  I was part of several conversations around how the technology market has evolved lately and what it means to them.  They are more concerned…

HR Help Desk Solutions at the HR Tech Conference

October 16, 2013 What a year for HR Tech! With over 3900 attendees and 300 exhibitors, this year’s show was the largest in terms of size and attendance. As a booth dweller, it was certainly evident in the exhibit hall. Booth traffic was up from last year, and we spoke with attendees from all over the world with so many different HR roles, experiences and backgrounds. HR technology buying is up with many HR practitioners expressing a desire for cloud-based, totally integrated systems. The good news for us is the demand for HR Case Management systems is also up. As Scott Berg states in his October 2013 Northland Capital Markets Report, “Recent conversations in the HR software space have highlighted more customer interest in HR Case Management software, a nascent market opportunity but a product most enterprise companies will likely leverage over the…

Process Design and Knowledge Management

August 29, 2013 Process design has been a very popular activity for HR over the last few years, and we've gotten pretty good at knowing how to do it.  This inevitably leads to documentation and, hopefully, employee facing content that explains the rules and the policies that are related.  This is often an overlooked feature in your HR Shared Services environment.   The idea of pulling a process apart and rebuilding it isn't terribly complex.  Find what drives data, find what drives activity, and find which pieces aren't bringing you value.  See a lot of extra movement?  Data changing hands?  A lot of approval stops in the chain?  All indicators that there are opportunities to improve how you operate.  Knowledge management as part of your HR helpdesk, if looked at critically, can also point the direction to improvements.  How do you communicate the…

Why Many HR Software Implementations Fail

August 22, 2013 Based on my years of professional experience in HR technology and implementation in particular, I'd like offer some thoughts on why software implementations fail.   In my opinion, the reason many implementations fail is actually two-fold. Either the process is made unnecessarily complicated and weighed down by bureaucracy or the overall project isn't given enough merit and by that I mean not having the right team members in place, adequate time devoted to the project, clear cut objectives, a lack of strategic planning, and finally often saddled with a deadline that prohibits success.   The dreaded over complicated project typically drags on endlessly, is often over complicated by a series of scope calls where no one makes strategic decisions without a series of sub-meetings and second guessing. These implementations often have too many team members involved in the process which…
