Why “Happy Employees” Leads to a Successful Software Vendor Relationship

sustainability in HR
September 28, 2015 As I was pondered a topic one of my colleagues, Rayanne Thorn, wrote about, Understanding Employee Engagement, it got me thinking deeper about a vendor’s employees, and whether prospects should consider how engaged or happy employees are at a software vendor they are considering as part of their decision-making process. I think they should and let me take you through my reasoning. Evaluating Vendors When a customer is evaluating vendors, at the top of their list is usually the vendor’s ability to meet their technological needs. If they can’t meet that, all of the other considerations are mute. After that, close behind are: 1) price; 2) the vendor’s ability to deliver on what they commit to; and 3) the vendor’s customer support. At the end of the day, I consider #2 and #3 to be the most important considerations prospects…

The Rising of Dovetail – Partnerships Matter

partnerships
September 18, 2015 Lessons of Partnership One of the most important lessons I have learned over the last several years while working for and with HR technology companies has been the importance of establishing and maintaining partnership relationships. Interestingly enough, some of my best friends in life have come as the result of creating a business / vendor relationship or working partnership. Loyalty Pays Off I have have been known to be a pretty loyal partner - I have worked with individuals and organizations for years and even brought new partners to the table to enrich a project but there have also been times when I have held the speaker high, by myself, and just proclaimed the good work of a partner/friend or my own organization.  There is a right time for each approach. Today I Shout for Workday Two years in the…

5 Tips to Get the Most out of HR Tech Conference Attendance

value
September 15, 2015 Conference Season! With all the big HR Tech shows around the corner, Dovetail will be exhibiting at a few of the biggest: Workday Rising in Las Vegas, HR Technology Conference & Expo in Las Vegas, and HR Tech World Conference in Paris, France, It’s a good idea, as an attendee, to start planning to maximize your time spent at these events.  As a Former HR Tech Buyer So, as a former buyer of HR Technology myself, here are 5 tips/ suggestions/ ideas from me to help you get the most from your T&E investment: Tips for the Attendee (and the vendors!)   1. BE ORGANIZED.  Ahead of time, read through the conference agenda and plan which sessions you want to attend. Most companies will send more than one person, so work as a team with your colleagues to make sure…

Customer Service and the HR Tech Buyer

September 11, 2015 Customer Service in Your Selection of Software Vendors I was reading Naomi Bloom’s blog post, “In Enterprise Software and Luxury Accommodations, Details Matter and No Disappointment Accepted” and it got me thinking. I think Naomi makes a really good comparison, but I will add another element, Customer Service. Things will happen, whether at the luxury accommodations or with your Enterprise Software. The key question becomes what does the establishment/vendor do when there is a problem? That will probably be what you remember more than the actual problem. Addressing Enterprise Software It is inevitable that there will be problems during implementation. Any HR Tech vendor who tells you they never have problems is lying to you. Expectation differences, communication gaps, the customer environment is slightly (or vastly) different than the vendor was told/expected - they happen. The best vendors are set…

Understanding Employee Engagement

September 9, 2015 In the Beginning... When I became a Certified Dental Assistant just before my 19th birthday, I never wondered what employee engagement was. I never questioned whether or not I was treated well or paid enough. My boss was a 36-year old guy, a dentist who employed two hygienists, two assistants, and one office manager. As a 19-year old who had just finished an intensive three-semester program, I thought life and work were pretty sweet. And I guess they were. Until, Until my needs were no longer met and a poor working condition appeared. I made the decision to leave after three years. I loved my job, but another employee had made my life miserable. She was fired less than a year after I left. There had been no mechanism in place for me to properly report incidents and I had no…

5 Reasons for Partner-Built Integrations

September 8, 2015 "Look For Vendors..." Not too long ago, I read Starr Conspiracy’ blog post titled “The ADP and Zenefits Kerfuffle, part 2: 5 Lessons for HR Technology Customers and Vendors” from HR Tech analyst and go-to market expert George LaRocque.  A great point was shared which continues to stick with me today:   “Look for vendors that support their integrations like a product – not a service.”   Sound Advice This is sound advice to the HR Technology buyer. Not only because buyers don't want what happened to Zenefits customers to happen to them, but also to consider these 5 reasons partner-built integrations are a sound investment   Technology Stack - A supported partner integration has been built with both parties being involved.  This means their technology stack has been understood by both sides, and the integration is working within the boundaries of their…

Fun with Filters! Addressing an HR Challenge

September 1, 2015 The Challenges HR Practitioners Face One of the greatest challenges I faced in my time working as an HR Practitioner was making sure I gave the right information when answering an employee's question.  I've never worked with any company that had the same answer for every employee, especially when dealing with things like benefits, compensation, or vacation policy.  And the challenges for a global company are even greater, especially when policies are all in English ("Because that's the standard!") but your employees only speak French.  Answering a question is easy.  Figuring out how to find the right answer in a language specific employees speak and understand can be maddening. What to Do? Enter our filtering feature for knowledge.  The Dovetail Employee Engagement Suite allows your system admin to set up and apply filters to your knowledge, making sure to show the right information…

Dovetail Launches Certified Workday Integration to Assist HR in Tracking Daily Activities

August 23, 2015 Celebrate! We’re celebrating today, because we are officially a Workday Certified Solution Partner – yes we graduated from the hottest HCM integration university this summer! Commitment Pays Off Two years ago, Dovetail made a commitment with Workday to design, build, and deliver a real time bi-directional integration to help serve the Dovetail and Workday ecosystem, cohesively. It’s a true win-win outcome for both vendor and customers - as anyone with software implementation experience will tell you - getting two technologies integrated together on a project is never easy. One very big pain with custom integrations is accountability – when things go wrong, who is accountable? Is it your internal IT, or perhaps vendor one or vendor two – maybe it’s all three? Which one will own the problem and drive through to resolution, and not just point fingers? Continued Commitment With a…

Building Reminders in Dovetail Employee Engagement Suite

August 11, 2015 Employee Engagement Suite   The Dovetail Employee Engagement Suite (EES) was designed around a few simple ideas.   Our clients are smart. Our clients deserve to be able to build and modify their own configuration in ways that suit them. Our clients sometimes have better ideas than we do.   To that end, we purposefully built a system that is all about configuration choices.  This leads to my answering a lot of questions with, "It depends." Does the system notify you when you get a new case?  It depends. Do I have to log in to see my alerts? It depends. Can I have a hug?  It depends.  (OK, that one usually is a yes.  But you get the point.) Why is "It depends" the answer?  Because the question of "does it" depends on "have you told it to?"  Have…

The HCM Buying Process – Vendor Selection Strategy

employee portal
July 20, 2015 Recently, I wrote about the Sierra-Cedar HR Systems Survey, and how that survey helped me to get multi-million dollar funding for new HCM technology.  While I was writing that entry, it made me think of the next step of the HCM buying process: vendor selection.   In one of my previous roles, I was tasked with evaluating the current technology in place, then providing strategic direction of what to do with our existing HR technology - and how it would benefit our to-be designed HR Shared Services organization.   Once I could prove the most cost-effective long-term strategy for the firm was a rip-and-replace of old for new, I then set my focus on building out our requirements and the vendor selection strategy.   I’ve never been a fan of large RFPs that basically allow the vendor to tick boxes,…
