SHRM National 2012 Street Hockey for a Good Cause

June 14, 2012 What could be better than a game of street hockey at SHRM National in Atlanta, GA in June? A game of street hockey at SHRM National to raise money and awareness for the Atlanta, Mission.  The Atlanta Mission is one of SHRM’s charity partners and provides emergency shelter, residential discipleship, job attainment, and transitional housing to more than 950 homeless men, women and children daily.Dovetail is teaming up with SHRM to sponsor the first ever SHRM 2012 Street Hockey game for charity on Sunday, June 24th at 5:30 ET. Considering PHR/SPHR Certification? Good Idea.

June 7, 2012 Why continue your education? As a current college student I can appreciate the importance of higher education. Yes, some days and some exams make me want to give up, but I know all of my hard work will be worth it when I receive a diploma. In today’s world, a degree or a certification shows commitment to your peers, employees and organization and your dedication to your profession.   HR certifications show that you have mastered the core HR principles that drive your profession. Earning an HR Certification can set you apart in many ways, including:   Making your resume stand out. One out of two recruiters prefer those with HR certifications. Recognition from your organization: HR certified professionals are viewed as more self-motivated by business leaders Networking opportunities: this certification connects you to an elite network of motivated HR…

The Best Thing About HR Technology

June 5, 2012 I've been fortunate enough in my career to work in several major functions, including Operations, Quality, IT and, of course, HR. You could probably deduce that HR has a special place in my heart, since it is where I decided to stay. But the intersection of HR and IT is, to me, the most amazing area in which to spend your time. Great HR people who are tech savvy working beside brilliant technical minds who understand how to interact with others. It's a truly remarkable field.   The best thing, though, is the impact HR technology can have when it is done right.   One of the toughest things about being in HR is the aching need to help others that so many practitioners face every day. Oh sure, there are some knuckleheads in every organization that you could live…

The 10-armed Monkey in your HR Organization

May 25, 2012 Last week, I was interviewing one of our customers who had agreed to do a case study. I was asking him to describe his HR department before implementing Dovetail and explain why they began searching for HR case management software. He described an exercise that he did with his team months before purchasing Dovetail which was the point when he decided that the status quo needed to be changed.During a brainstorming session with the HR leadership team, one of the warm up activities (he split the team into two groups) was to draw a picture of what they thought they currently looked like as a team. Both teams drew pretty much a mess - trying to handle far too many items at once, fire-fighting, etc. One picture even had a monkey with 10 arms trying to juggle 30 balls, with…

Cake, Covers and Best Practices

May 8, 2012   I love Cake. And while that is true in many different ways, I'm not speaking today about the icing delivery system we all know so well. Instead I'm referring to the band whose most popular song, "Short Skirt, Long Jacket," you've probably never heard.  What I really dig about them, though, is their selection of covers across their albums. War Pigs (yes, the old Black Sabbath song, Ruby (yes, the old Kenny Rogers song), I Will Survive (yes, the old Gloria Gaynor song) and Mahna Mahna (yes, the old Muppets song) are all served up in new ways.   Covers aren't easy to pull off.  If you start with a great tune, you can either try to copy the original or do something new with it.  If the tune is weak, you have to save it from itself.  A…

May 4, 2012 We are pleased to announce that one William Bostwick with Adventist Health System is not only leaving Chicago with some new knowledge on Dovetail’s HR Case Management Software, he will also be going home with a new iPad 3. Although I’m sure he’s struggles to decide which one is cooler, I hope he can confidently say his visit to the Dovetail Software booth at IHRIM’s 2012 HRMS Strategies Conference was well worth it. We enjoyed chatting with William and all of this year’s conference attendees that came by our booth and look forward to attending again next year. If you didn’t get a chance to stop and see us, I know what you’re thinking: “How am I going to get a short synopsis of who Dovetail is and what they do in a tradeshow-like environment?” Not to worry. We were…
