The 10-armed Monkey in your HR Organization

May 25, 2012 Last week, I was interviewing one of our customers who had agreed to do a case study. I was asking him to describe his HR department before implementing Dovetail and explain why they began searching for HR case management software. He described an exercise that he did with his team months before purchasing Dovetail which was the point when he decided that the status quo needed to be changed.During a brainstorming session with the HR leadership team, one of the warm up activities (he split the team into two groups) was to draw a picture of what they thought they currently looked like as a team. Both teams drew pretty much a mess - trying to handle far too many items at once, fire-fighting, etc. One picture even had a monkey with 10 arms trying to juggle 30 balls, with…

Happening on May 22nd: 3 Panelists from 3 Different Industries Discuss the 4 Components of Preventive Employee Relations

May 9, 2012 If you are a Dovetail email subscriber, you probably got an email invitation today for this month’s webinar: Monitoring & Improving the Workplace with Preventive Employee Relations. I hope you’re able to attend because on May 22nd at 1:30 ET, we will host 3 passionate and influential HR experts and get their take on what it means to practice preventive employee relations successfully. When you hear the word “preventive” in a HR setting, odds are healthcare comes to mind, but as we discuss in our latest knowledge article 4 Key Components of Preventive Employee Relations, employee wellness is about more than just employees’ physical health. Preventive Employee Relations relies on the detection of trends, patterns and inconsistencies related to ER such as discrimination, harassment and bullying in the workplace. This enables companies to take immediate action, as well as prepare long-term…

Congratulations to Dovetail’s IHRIM Attendee iPad 3 Winner William Bostwick!

May 4, 2012 We are pleased to announce that one William Bostwick with Adventist Health System is not only leaving Chicago with some new knowledge on Dovetail’s HR Case Management Software, he will also be going home with a new iPad 3. Although I’m sure he’s struggles to decide which one is cooler, I hope he can confidently say his visit to the Dovetail Software booth at IHRIM’s 2012 HRMS Strategies Conference was well worth it. We enjoyed chatting with William and all of this year’s conference attendees that came by our booth and look forward to attending again next year. If you didn’t get a chance to stop and see us, I know what you’re thinking: “How am I going to get a short synopsis of who Dovetail is and what they do in a tradeshow-like environment?” Not to worry. We were…

Let’s Talk Employee Relations Metrics at IHRIM

April 23, 2012 In light of the upcoming IHRIM conference, I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about tracking Employee Relations (ER) metrics. I noticed several sessions addressing metrics and workforce analytics on the IHRIM agenda, but I haven’t seen any specifically discussing ER metrics. Why aren’t these metrics part of the conversation?   HR metrics - such as performance, employee engagement and turnover - are widely discussed and tracked by many organizations; however, ER metrics - such as the number and type of complaints/issues filed by employees, the most common employee questions and requests, and how much time and money your ER department spends fielding them - are tracked and reported on less frequently.   In our last webinar 5 Employee Relations (ER) Metrics you Should be Tracking & Why Cathy Missildine-Martin, a 20-year HR veteran and expert on the subject of HR metrics and…

Dovetail Welcomes Head of HR Process Design Dwane Lay

April 10, 2012  We are so excited to have Dwane Lay join us as Dovetail’s newest executive team member and Head of HR Process Design. In his new role, Dwane is responsible for analyzing, defining, documenting and communicating HR processes and best practices to Dovetail’s HR product development team and the HR community, as well as working with prospects and customers to analyze their current environment and improve it with technology and process implementation. Dwane’s past experience and expertise in HR are going to make him a great asset to our team and our current and future customers, but I thought I’d take a minute to list a few of the reasons why I’m particularly excited about him coming on board: He loves swag: As seen in one HR Tech Conference 2011 Swag Blog YouTube video, Dwane is quite the swag connoisseur. I think…

Complimentary Webinar: 5 Employee Relations Metrics you Should be Tracking & Why

March 19, 2012 In my last post, I referenced a recent study by the Society of Human Resource Management, which revealed that senior-level HR executives rank the opportunity to do strategic planning as one of the key elements of job satisfaction. For most HR professionals, that means having the metrics necessary to identify and solve business problems.   While HR organizations have caught onto the importance of tracking HR metrics, such as performance, employee engagement and turnover, many fail to measure employee relations (ER) metrics, which can be just as critical to your organization’s strategic plan, with the same precision.   If tracked correctly, ER metrics can help determine the root cause of workforce trends in your organization. In thiswebinar, human capital strategy consultant and 20-year HR veteran Cathy Missildine-Martin will reveal five critical ER metrics you should be tracking and why.   Join us to…

How HR Professionals can Improve their Job Satisfaction

March 13, 2012 I recently read What you Like about your Job, an article published in HR Magazine sharing the results of a survey conducted by the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), which explored HR professionals' job satisfaction levels and the contributing factors. The survey revealed that the majority of senior-level HR executives identify the opportunity to do strategic planning for their organizations and communication between them and senior management as two key elements affecting their job satisfaction.   The article goes on to say that less than half of the HR professionals surveyed feel “very satisfied” with the above mentioned areas.   In a past blog post, I referenced an article by Human Resources IQ contributor Brad Powers, in which he cites two causes of why HR may not have a seat at the boardroom table when it comes time to make decisions about the…

Dovetail Software Releases New White Paper Revealing How to Identify Employee Grievance Hot Spots

February 21, 2012 According to the EEOC, the number of employment-related claims filed in 2011 was 99,947. Retaliation and discrimination claims were filed most frequently and dealing with those claims almost always requires partcipation from the ER department. A recent survey conducted by HRmarketer services group reveals that 72 percent of U.S. employers say they do not produce audit trail reports for their employee complaints, despite the fact that just one sexual harassment case or discrimination lawsuit can cost a company dearly in terms of its bottom line and its reputation. In this white paper, you will learn how organizations can protect their reputation and financial assets by using an HR case management system to carefully track, audit, and deliver analytics on employee complaints and grievances. Download now and discover: how an HR case management system mitigates legal risks; how employers gain insights…
